Mesogeography

Mesogeography is the study of geographical phenomena at an intermediate scale, commonly associated with regional geography. It examines patterns and processes that unfold over areas larger than a single site but smaller than a continent, such as landscapes, infrastructure networks, land-use systems, and cultural regions. What counts as mesogeography can vary by author, but it generally covers spatial units ranging from tens to thousands of square kilometers and focuses on regional integration of physical and human dimensions.

Within the broader discipline, mesogeography sits between macrogeography (regional to global patterns) and microgeography (site-specific details). It overlaps with regional geography, physical geography, and human geography, and it is often employed in planning and environmental management to understand regional dynamics such as urbanization, resource distribution, and ecosystem services.

Methodologically, mesogeography relies on cartographic analysis and geographic information systems, remote sensing, spatial statistics, and landscape or regional ecological approaches. It integrates natural features such as climate, hydrology, soils, and topography with human factors like settlement form, transportation, land use, and governance.

Applications include regional planning, economic development, hazard assessment, conservation, and sustainable management of landscapes. Case studies may address regional climatic gradients, watershed organization, or the spatial structure of cities and hinterlands, illustrating how regional-scale interactions shape outcomes for communities and environments.

Though widely used in historical and regional geography, the term mesogeography is not universally standardized and may be used flexibly to describe intermediate-scale studies within various theoretical traditions.
