The name Merkurego combines echoes of Mercury, symbolizing speed and communication, with a suffix indicating movement. The name was chosen during the founding festival in 2064, reflecting the city's emphasis on rapid trade and innovation.

Founded in 2064 by merchant coalitions seeking self-rule, Merkurego grew as a port and finance center. It achieved de facto independence after the 2072 regional crisis and gained formal recognition in 2082.
