Merkistökoodit, often translated as character encoding, are systems that assign a unique numerical value to each character. These numerical values are then represented in binary form, allowing computers to store, process, and transmit text. Without character encodings, digital text would be a jumble of meaningless bits.

Historically, various character encodings have been developed, each with its own set of characters and numerical assignments. Early encodings like ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) were limited, primarily supporting English characters and basic symbols. As computing evolved and the need to represent characters from different languages grew, more comprehensive encodings emerged.

Unicode is the dominant character encoding standard today. It aims to provide a unique number for every character, regardless of platform, program, or language. Unicode supports a vast array of characters from virtually all writing systems, as well as symbols and emojis. Various encoding forms, such as UTF-8, UTF-16, and UTF-32, are used to represent Unicode characters efficiently in bytes. UTF-8 is particularly popular for its backward compatibility with ASCII and its variable-length encoding, making it suitable for both English-heavy and multilingual text.

The choice of character encoding is crucial for ensuring that text is displayed correctly across different systems and applications. Mismatched encodings can lead to garbled text, known as mojibake, where characters are misinterpreted and displayed as nonsensical sequences. Understanding character encodings is fundamental to digital communication and data management.
