Menghidrolisis

Menghidrolisis is a chemical process where a molecule of water is used to break down a compound. This reaction is the reverse of a condensation reaction, where water is formed by joining two molecules. In hydrolysis, the water molecule splits into a hydrogen ion (H+) and a hydroxide ion (OH-). These ions then attach to the fragments of the compound that has been broken apart.

Hydrolysis reactions are common in many biological and chemical systems. For example, in the digestion of food, complex carbohydrates are hydrolyzed into simpler sugars, proteins are hydrolyzed into amino acids, and fats are hydrolyzed into fatty acids and glycerol. For instance, the production of soaps involves the hydrolysis of fats or oils with a strong base, a process known as saponification. Similarly, the breakdown of plastics or polymers often involves hydrolysis to recover their constituent monomers. The rate of hydrolysis can be influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, and the presence of catalysts.
