Meltspinnen is a fictional genus of spiders that appears in speculative biology and fantasy literature. The name, from German Spinnen meaning "spiders" and melt referencing their heat-responsive biology, denotes a trait shared by many described species: the ability for certain silk and tissues to soften when exposed to heat.

Description: Members are medium-sized spiders with a slender body and translucent coloration. The most distinctive feature is a thermally responsive silk produced by their spinnerets. In laboratory and field descriptions, this silk remains stiff at ambient temperatures but can become pliable between about 40 and 55 degrees Celsius, enabling rapid web repair and structural reconfiguration.

Habitat and ecology: Meltspinnen are typically depicted in temperate forest environments and near geothermal or hot spring ecosystems where mild heat sources occur naturally. They build orb-like webs with strong anchor lines and adaptive mesh, often reinforcing the frame with thicker silk when the local prey density is high. They are described as solitary hunters, active mainly at night, feeding on flying insects and small arthropods.

Reproduction and life cycle: As with many spiders in stories, reproduction yields multiple egg sacs protected by waxy coatings. Spiderlings emerge after a short incubation and disperse by ballooning; maturation to adulthood occurs over months to years depending on the fictional setting.
