Meistersänger

Meistersänger is a German honorific title awarded to distinguished singers of voice. The word literally means “master singer” and it has been used in Germany and Austria since the early modern period to recognize exceptional vocal artistry and contribution to the musical life of a region or institution.

The origin of the title can be traced to the German universities of the 14th and 15th centuries, where members of singing guilds, known as Meistersinger, were also required to prove their musical skill in public contests. While Meistersinger were primarily composers and poets, the role of the Meistersänger was that of a professional vocalist who performed at court, in churches and on civic occasions. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the title was frequently bestowed by royal or municipal governments on singers who had achieved national or international renown.

In contemporary Germany the title is often conferred by state ministries of culture, for example Bavaria’s State Ministry of the Arts presents the title to singers who have made a lasting artistic contribution within the state. It carries no legal privileges but is a prestigious marker of a singer’s professional excellence. Notable recipients in the 20th century include tenor Rudolf Firsching, soprano Judith Blegen, and baritone Peter Schreier. The award continues to be granted in an effort to preserve German vocal traditions and encourage high standards in opera, lied, and choral performance.
