Meggyfák

Meggyfák, a Hungarian term, translates to "cherry trees" in English. This refers to trees that produce cherries, a type of fruit. These trees belong to the genus Prunus, which also includes plums, peaches, and almonds. Cherry trees are cultivated globally for both their fruit and their ornamental value.

There are two main categories of cherry trees: sweet cherries and sour cherries. Sweet cherries, such as Bing and Rainier, are typically eaten fresh. Sour cherries, like Morello and Montmorency, are often used in baking, preserves, and juices due to their tart flavor. Cherry blossoms, the flowers of the cherry tree, are also highly appreciated, particularly in Japan where they are a symbol of spring and renewal.

Cherry trees are deciduous, meaning they shed their leaves annually. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun. Propagation can be achieved through grafting, budding, or seed, though grafting is most common for fruit-bearing varieties to ensure desired traits. The lifecycle of a cherry tree involves blooming in spring, followed by fruit development in late spring and summer. The trees can live for many decades, with some specimens reaching over a hundred years old. Their wood is also valued for furniture making and smoking meats.
