Megainterpretation

Megainterpretation refers to an approach in philosophy, particularly in the philosophy of mind, that suggests mental states are constituted by very broad, complex interpretations of a system's physical states. This contrasts with more localized or specific interpretations that might attribute a single mental state to a particular neural firing pattern. A megainterpretation posits that understanding an entire system, often an organism or even a sophisticated computational system, as having beliefs, desires, or intentions requires a very large-scale, holistic assignment of mental properties.

The core idea is that a system's behavior and its internal physical workings can be understood as representing or meaning something only when viewed through the lens of a vast and interconnected interpretative framework. This framework encompasses not just individual sensory inputs or motor outputs, but the entire causal history and potential future actions of the system. Proponents argue that this megainterpretative stance is necessary to capture the richness and complexity of genuine mental phenomena, as opposed to simply describing functional processes.
