Medikaliseerumine

Medikaliseerumine, often translated as medicalization, refers to the process by which human conditions and experiences that were not previously considered medical problems become defined and treated as such. This can involve social behaviors, normal life cycle changes, or even subjective feelings being reframed within a medical or biological context.

The phenomenon of medicalization is often driven by various factors, including the expansion of medical knowledge and technology, the influence of pharmaceutical companies, and societal shifts in understanding health and illness. For instance, conditions like shyness or premenstrual syndrome have, at different times, been medicalized, leading to the development of specific diagnoses and treatments.

Critics argue that medicalization can lead to the over-prescription of drugs and unnecessary medical interventions. It can also shift responsibility for social problems onto individuals, framing them as medical issues requiring individual treatment rather than societal solutions. Conversely, proponents suggest that medicalization can provide relief and improved quality of life for individuals experiencing genuine suffering that can be addressed through medical means.
