Mediaanikeskittymän

Mediaanikeskittymän is a hypothetical statistical concept describing the degree to which observations in a dataset cluster around the median value. The term, formed from Finnish mediaani (median) and keskittymä (concentration/cluster), is used in some theoretical discussions to illustrate central clustering independent of tails or symmetry.

Definition and measures: There is no universally adopted definition. In qualitative terms, mediaanikeskittymän denotes how tightly data are concentrated near the median. In quantitative practice, researchers may operationalize it as: (a) the proportion of observations lying within a central interval defined around the median (for example, within median ± c times a robust dispersion measure such as the median absolute deviation, MAD); or (b) the width of the smallest interval centered at the median that contains a fixed proportion of observations (for instance, 50%). Robust dispersion measures like MAD or the interquartile range (IQR) are commonly used to define the central interval.

Interpretation and use: A higher mediaanikeskittymä indicates stronger clustering near the median, suggesting a robust central tendency with relatively little central dispersion. A lower value points to dispersion away from the median, such as bimodality or heavy tails.

Examples: A symmetric unimodal distribution with most data near the median (e.g., a narrow normal distribution) would show high central concentration, whereas a bimodal distribution with two distinct peaks near but not at the median could yield a lower concentration.
