Mecsekhegység

The Mecsek is a mountain range in southern Hungary, located north of the city of Pécs. It is part of the Transdanubian Mountains. The Mecsek is known for its scenic beauty, diverse flora and fauna, and historical significance.

The mountain range stretches for approximately 50 kilometers and has an average elevation of around 400-500 meters, with its highest peak, Zengő, reaching 682 meters. The geology of the Mecsek is varied, featuring primarily limestone and sandstone formations. The mountains are traversed by numerous streams and dotted with small lakes.

The climate of the Mecsek is continental, with warm summers and cold winters. The diverse terrain and climate support a rich biodiversity. The forests are predominantly deciduous, with oak, beech, and chestnut trees being common. Various species of birds, mammals, and insects inhabit the area.

Historically, the Mecsek region has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological findings indicate settlements from the Neolithic period. During the Ottoman occupation of Hungary in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Mecsek served as a natural barrier and a refuge. Numerous castles and fortifications were built in the area, some of which are still visible today.

The Mecsek is a popular destination for hiking, tourism, and recreation. Hiking trails crisscross the mountains, leading to viewpoints, caves, and historical sites. The city of Pécs, situated at the southern foot of the range, is a cultural and historical center that benefits greatly from its proximity to the Mecsek. The mountains also play a role in local folklore and traditions.
