Measurementfinite is a term used in measurement theory to denote a measurement process that yields a finite set of outcomes. The outcome space is finite, contrasting with continuous measurements. Finiteness often results from discretization, instrument design, or digital readouts.

Formally, a measurement finite process is a map M from a system’s state space X to a finite outcome set O, with |O| = N. The statistics are described by conditional distributions P(Y=y|X=x) or, in quantum contexts, by a POVM with finite outcomes. Discretization schemes enforce a finite alphabet and simplify analysis.

Examples include digital instruments that report readings at a fixed set of levels: a digital thermometer, an 8-bit color sensor, or a camera producing finite grayscale or color values. In quantum experiments, measuring an observable with a finite spectrum yields a finite set of results.

Applications span statistics, machine learning, and engineering. Finite outcome spaces yield multinomial models and straightforward inference. In machine learning, classification tasks operate on finite label sets, and in communications and sensing, finite outcomes enable efficient encoding and error analysis.
