Maudgalyayana

Maudgalyayana, also known as Kolita, was one of the principal disciples of Gautama Buddha. Along with his friend Sariputta, he joined the Buddha's monastic order and quickly became renowned for his spiritual attainments and supernatural powers. Maudgalyayana is often depicted as the foremost in psychical powers, a testament to his mastery of meditation and yogic practices.

According to Buddhist scriptures, Maudgalyayana possessed the ability to traverse different realms, communicate with beings in other existences, and recall his past lives. These abilities were not merely for display but were used to aid others, to understand the workings of karma, and to demonstrate the profound possibilities of a mind disciplined by the Dharma. He is frequently cited in stories where his powers are instrumental in resolving difficult situations or in teaching the nature of reality.

Despite his extraordinary gifts, Maudgalyayana also faced personal tragedy, including the suffering of his mother, which led him to use his powers to alleviate her pain in a previous existence. His life and teachings emphasize the importance of wisdom and compassion, alongside the development of inner potential. After a long life dedicated to the Dharma, Maudgalyayana, like Sariputta, is said to have passed away shortly before the Buddha, leaving a significant legacy within the early Buddhist community. His stories serve as inspiration and as parables illustrating the Buddhist path.
