Matterstandarden

Matterstandarden, commonly referred to as Matter, is an open, royalty-free standard for smart home devices designed to enable secure and seamless interoperability across brands and ecosystems. Developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), formerly the Zigbee Alliance, Matter consolidates multiple networking technologies into a single IP-based framework. Its aim is that devices from different manufacturers work together regardless of the control platform, such as Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa.

The project began as Project CHIP (Connected Home over IP) in the late 2010s and was renamed Matter as it matured. It has drawn support from major technology companies and device makers, with a certification program established to ensure compatibility. First consumer products implementing Matter began appearing in the early 2020s, and the standard has continued to evolve with updates and extended device categories.

Technically, Matter is built on an IP-based networking model and supports Thread for low-power, edge-enabled devices, as well as Wi-Fi and Ethernet for broader network access. Devices using Matter communicate through a common data model and secure protocols, with commissioning often initiated via Bluetooth Low Energy. The standard emphasizes security, offering strong cryptographic protections, device attestation, and secure over-the-air updates to maintain integrity across firmware changes.

Adoption of Matter aims to reduce fragmentation in the smart home market by enabling cross-brand compatibility and simpler setup. It is supported by major ecosystems and many device manufacturers, who submit products for Matter Certification to demonstrate interoperability.
