Matrioshka
Matrioshka, also spelled matryoshka or matrioska, refers to a set of Russian nesting dolls: wooden figures of decreasing size placed one inside another. The outer doll is hollow and openable at the midline to reveal a smaller doll, which in turn opens to reveal another, continuing for several pieces. Typical sets contain five to ten dolls, most commonly featuring female figures in traditional dress, often painted with floral patterns and bright colors. In addition to human figures, there are many variants depicting animals, fairy-tale characters, or political symbols.
