Matriisitulostus

Matriisitulostus, also known as dot matrix printing, is a type of impact computer printing where characters or images are formed by striking an ink-soaked ribbon against paper. This is achieved by a print head containing a matrix of small pins, or needles. When the print head moves across the paper, these pins are actuated in specific patterns to create the desired characters or graphics.

The print head typically consists of a vertical line of pins, often 7, 9, 18, or 24 pins. As the print head moves horizontally, individual pins are pushed forward to strike the ribbon and leave a dot on the paper. The density and arrangement of these dots form the character or image. Different resolutions can be achieved by varying the number of pins and the precision of their movement.

Matriisitulostus was a popular printing technology for many years due to its relatively low cost and ability to print multi-part forms (like carbon copies) because of the impact mechanism. However, it is known for its noisy operation and the relatively low print quality compared to modern printing technologies like inkjet or laser printing. The characters produced often have a distinctive pixelated appearance.

While largely superseded by newer technologies for general use, matriisitulostus is still employed in some niche applications where its durability, low cost, and ability to print on continuous forms or multi-part stationery are advantageous, such as in point-of-sale systems, receipt printers, and industrial logging.
