Matriisiosoitteen

Matriisiosoitteen, also known as matrix addressing, is a technique used in electronic displays and other applications to control a grid of individual elements, such as pixels or segments. It simplifies the wiring by allowing a common set of control lines to address multiple elements. Instead of a dedicated wire for each element, a matrix display uses a grid of row and column lines.

In a typical matrix display, each element is located at the intersection of a specific row and a specific column. By activating a particular row and a particular column simultaneously, the element at that intersection can be selectively controlled. This is achieved by sending signals down the chosen row and column lines. The elements themselves are often designed to respond only when both the row and column signals are present, preventing unwanted activation of other elements.

This method significantly reduces the number of connections required compared to a direct-drive system, where each element would need its own individual control line. For a display with N rows and M columns, matrix addressing requires only N + M control lines, whereas direct addressing would need N * M lines. This reduction in wiring is crucial for larger displays or densely packed arrays, leading to cost savings and simplified manufacturing.

Common applications of matrix addressing include LCD screens, LED matrices, and segment displays. The underlying principle is fundamental to how many modern electronic visual interfaces operate, enabling efficient and scalable control of a large number of individual output points.
