Matingkestävyyden
Matingkestävyys, a Finnish term, translates to "mating resistance" or "cross-incompatibility" in English. It refers to biological mechanisms that prevent or reduce successful reproduction between different species or even distinct populations within the same species. This phenomenon is a key factor in the process of speciation, acting as a barrier to gene flow.
There are various forms of matingkestävyys. Pre-zygotic isolation mechanisms occur before the formation of a zygote.
Post-zygotic isolation mechanisms occur after a zygote has formed but prevent the hybrid offspring from surviving
Matingkestävyys can arise from genetic divergence between populations. As populations adapt to different environments or evolve
