Materialvolumenanteil, often abbreviated as VFM or simply referred to as volume fraction, is a dimensionless quantity used in materials science and engineering to describe the proportion of a specific material within a composite or mixture. It is defined as the ratio of the volume occupied by a particular component to the total volume of the mixture. Mathematically, it can be expressed as V_component / V_total.

This concept is crucial for understanding and predicting the macroscopic properties of materials. For instance, in a composite material made of two phases, the volume fraction of each phase will significantly influence its mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal properties, and density. A higher volume fraction of a reinforcing phase, such as fibers in a polymer matrix, generally leads to increased stiffness and strength.

Volume fraction is distinct from mass fraction, which relates the mass of a component to the total mass. While related, the difference arises because different materials have different densities. Therefore, a component with a high volume fraction may not necessarily have a high mass fraction if its density is low.
