Materialstatus

Materialstatus is a term used in inventory and materials management to describe the current state of a material, whether it is a raw material, component, or finished good, within an organization. It is stored as master data in enterprise resource planning and logistics systems and is used to guide planning, procurement, and execution. In German-speaking contexts, the term is commonly used to refer to such state information.

Common status categories include: available or freigeben (ready to use), on order or bestellt, in transit or unterwegs, in production or Herstellung/Produktion, allocated or reserved (reserviert), blocked, quarantine, damaged, obsolete, and discontinued. The exact set depends on the system and business rules. A material’s status can affect whether it can be issued to production, sold, or moved between locations.

Role and applications: Materialstatus supports planning and execution across procurement, production planning, warehousing, and distribution. It enables rules such as “only materials with status available may be consumed,” or “materials on order must be monitored for expected arrival.” It also supports reporting on stock levels, lead times, and quality considerations.

Implementation: Materialstatus is usually implemented as a field in the material master or item record, linked to location and plant data and to other status indicators such as batch, quality status, and damage flags. It is configurable to reflect specific business processes, regulatory requirements, and industry practices.
