Causes vary by material type. Polymers and adhesives lose solvents or moisture and contract during curing; concrete and cement-based composites shrink as moisture content decreases and as chemical hydration products form; metals may contract during solidification and cooling; ceramics and ceramics-based systems exhibit sintering or phase-change related shrinkage; wood and other hygroscopic materials change size with humidity.

Measurement and documentation involve expressing shrinkage as a linear or volumetric strain, typically a percentage of the original dimensions. Common methods include dilatometry, strain gauges, or optical measurements. Values are material-specific and can depend on processing parameters, moisture history, and environmental conditions.
