There are no universal criteria for identifying a masterwork. Appraisal typically involves assessments of technical mastery, originality, influence, historical context, and critical reception. Because judgments are culturally and temporally contingent, what qualifies as a masterwork can vary across traditions and over time, leading to ongoing debates about inclusion and canon formation.
