Marvejols

Marvejols is a commune in the Lozère department in southern France, situated in the Massif Central. It lies at an elevation of about 790 meters on the right bank of the Roussières River, within the Aubrac plateau. The town is surrounded by pastoral landscapes, forested valleys, and is a gateway to the Lot River valleys and the Cévennes mountains.

The population of Marvejols has fluctuated over the past century, with recent estimates placing it around 1,000 residents. Economic activity historically centered on agriculture, particularly dairy and cattle grazing, as well as forestry. In recent decades tourism has become important, driven by the area's natural beauty and its reputation for small-scale gastronomy, notably the production of the traditional Languedoc cheese called "Fromage du Cantal" and the sweet pastries of the local bakery.

Marvejols has a number of historical and cultural sites. The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, dating from the 12th century, features Romanesque architecture and a bell tower that offers panoramic views of the surrounding plateau. The nearby Romanesque abbey of Hauterive, founded in the 10th century, remains a popular pilgrimage site. The town hosts an annual cultural festival, the "Fêtes de la Saint-Jean" in June, which celebrates traditional music and local cuisine.

Transport links to Marvejols include the D972 departmental road and regional bus services connecting it to Mende and Albi. The nearest train station is in Mende, approximately 40 kilometers away. The commune benefits from a small airfield used for general aviation and a growing network of cycle paths that attract visitors for hiking and cycling, especially the routes that link the Massif Central to the river valleys.
