Markhor

The markhor, Capra falconeri, is a large species of wild goat found in the mountains of Central Asia. It is characterized by its distinctive long, spiraling horns, which can reach up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length in males. The coat color varies depending on the subspecies and season, ranging from light brown to dark gray, with a shaggy winter coat and a shorter summer coat. They possess a white ruff of hair on their throat, giving them a majestic appearance.

Markhor are herbivores, primarily feeding on grasses, leaves, and shrubs. They are agile climbers, adept at navigating steep, rocky terrain, and are often found at altitudes between 1,000 and 3,600 meters (3,300 and 11,800 feet). Their habitat includes the Himalayas, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush mountain ranges, spanning across countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

These animals typically live in small herds, usually consisting of females and their young, while adult males are often solitary or form small bachelor groups. The mating season occurs in winter, and females give birth to one or two kids in the spring. Markhor are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss, poaching, and competition with domestic livestock. Conservation efforts are underway in several countries to protect their populations and ensure the survival of this magnificent species.
