Marist

Marist is a term used in Catholic contexts to refer to Mary, the mother of Jesus, or to groups and institutions associated with her devotion. In religious and educational settings, Marist denotes a family of institutes and schools that carry on Mary’s spirit of service, education, and mission.

The Society of Mary, commonly known as the Marists, is a Catholic religious institute founded in Lyon, France, in 1817 by Saint Marcellin Champagnat. Members include priests and brothers who dedicate themselves to education, parish ministry, and missionary work. The Marists maintain a global presence through communities, schools, and other ministries, and members may use the post-nominal SM.

A related body within the Marist family is the Institute of the Marist Brothers of the Schools, usually called the Marist Brothers (Fratres Maristae Scholae, FMS). This congregation was established in the early 19th century as a separate educational institute within the Marist tradition and has since operated schools and educational programs in many countries.

Marist institutions are widely known for their focus on education, youth formation, and service.
