Manteltyp

Manteltyp is a term used in German-language discourse to describe the typology of fireplace mantels (Mantelstücke) in architecture and interior design. It denotes a category or class of mantelpieces defined by stylistic features, construction method, proportion, and historical period. The Manteltyp serves as a design element that frames the fireplace, anchors a room’s composition, and signals stylistic intent.

Historically, mantelpieces evolved from functional shelves to ornate focal points. In European architecture they reflect broader design movements, from Classical and Baroque to Neoclassical, Historicist, and Art Nouveau, with later interpretations in Art Deco and Modernism.
