Manannan

Manannán mac Lir, often anglicized as Manannan, is a figure in Irish mythology, a sea deity and guardian of the Otherworld. His name means "Manannán, son of the sea." He is described as a powerful ruler of the sea and, in some traditions, a king of the Otherworld. He is closely associated with the Isle of Man, and folklore sometimes treats him as the island’s eponym or as a chieftain who guards its shores.

In myth, Manannán is a master of magical arts. He is commonly said to own or command a magical ship that can sail the seas at great speed and through other realms, and a cloak or mantle of mist or invisibility that allows him to vanish from sight. His best-known horse is Enbarr, a swift mount associated with travel and crossing boundaries. He is also connected with the winds and with the guidance of sailors, providing protection and safe passage to those who earn his favor.

Manannán appears in various medieval Irish texts and folk traditions, often as a gatekeeper to the Otherworld or as a beneficent guardian of travelers and seafarers. The legends position him at the edge between worlds, and his influence is linked to the western sea routes and to the lore of the supernatural. In later folklore, the Isle of Man’s name is sometimes linked to his name, reinforcing his regional importance.
