Mammalbird

Mammalbird is a term used in speculative biology to describe a hypothetical mammalian lineage that develops avian flight adaptations while retaining core mammalian traits. It is not an established taxon and has no fossil record or acceptance in scientific classification. The concept is used mainly in thought experiments, worldbuilding, and fiction to explore convergence between major vertebrate lineages.

In this concept, a mammalbird would combine fur or hair and lactation with features typical of birds, such as feathers, a beak, and a light, pneumatic skeletal structure with winged limbs capable of flight. Depending on the design, it might retain mammalian auditory and sensory systems, and a warm-blooded metabolism.

The evolutionary viability of such a form raises questions about anatomy, energy balance, and development. Flight requires large energy budgets and specialized adaptations, while mammalian traits can impose different constraints. In speculative scenarios, mammalbirds are imagined as results of convergent evolution or advanced genetic engineering, illustrating how different lineages might approach similar ecological roles.

In fiction and worldbuilding, mammalbirds appear as aerial omnivores or insectivores, often occupying ecological niches similar to birds but with mammalian biology. They serve as devices to illustrate evolutionary trade-offs or to create hybrid ecosystems.
