Mainitussa

Mainitussa is a Finnish adjective form derived from the past participle mainittu, itself from the verb mainita, meaning “to mention.” As an adjective it modifies nouns and agrees with them in number and case; in practice it most often appears in the inessive singular, yielding the form mainitussa. The sense is “the aforementioned” or “the mentioned,” referring to something already introduced earlier in the text.

Usage of mainitussa is common in formal registers such as legal texts, contracts, and academic writing. It signals back-reference to material that has been previously stated or discussed, helping to link successive sections without repeating the same nouns. Typical phrases include mainitussa sopimuksessa (in the mentioned contract), mainitussa tutkimuksessa (in the mentioned study), and mainitussa kappaleessa (in the mentioned paragraph).

The form is primarily a written-language device and is frequent in Finnish documentation and scholarly prose. In everyday speech, speakers may refer to “aiemmin mainittu” or simply repeat the noun instead of using mainittu- phrases.
