Mahnbescheidverfahren, often translated as "order for payment procedure" or "debt collection procedure," is a civil legal process in Germany used to expedite the collection of undisputed monetary claims. It is designed to provide a swift and relatively inexpensive means for creditors to obtain a legally binding document confirming a debt, which can then be used for enforcement if the debtor does not pay or object.

The procedure begins when a creditor files an application for a Mahnbescheid with the competent court. This application must contain details of the creditor, the debtor, and the debt itself, including the amount and the reason for the claim. If the application meets the formal requirements, the court issues a Mahnbescheid and serves it on the debtor.

The debtor then has two weeks to respond. They have two options: either to pay the debt in full or to formally object to the Mahnbescheid. If the debtor pays, the procedure concludes. If the debtor objects, the Mahnbescheid does not become legally enforceable.

If the debtor neither pays nor objects within the two-week period, the Mahnbescheid becomes final and legally binding. This final Mahnbescheid is equivalent to a court judgment and can be used by the creditor to initiate enforcement proceedings, such as seizing assets or garnishing wages, to collect the debt.

The Mahnbescheidverfahren is particularly useful for straightforward claims where there is little dispute about the existence of the debt. It avoids the need for a full court trial in the initial stages, making it a valuable tool for creditors seeking efficient debt recovery.
