Mahlzeitenersatz, literally “meal replacement” in German, is a category of foods designed to substitute for one or more conventional meals. They are produced as powders to mix with water or milk, ready-to-drink shakes, bars, soups, and other convenient formats. Their primary purposes are weight management, convenience, and medical nutrition when prescribed or advised by professionals.

Most Mahlzeitenersatz products aim to provide a balanced mix of macronutrients and micronutrients in a lower calorie package than a typical meal. They commonly contain protein, modest amounts of fat, carbohydrates, and added vitamins and minerals to help meet daily requirements when used as a substitute.
