Mahlgrad

Mahlgrad is a fictional town and municipality in the northern region of Veridia, a sovereign state in the continent of Nordmark. It lies along the Mahlbach river and at the foothills of the Eichenwald mountains, covering about 60 square kilometers and with an estimated population of 11,800 in 2023.

Etymology and geography: Mahlgrad derives from Germanic roots “Mahl” meaning grind and “Grad” meaning step or grade, a reference to historic mills on the river. The terrain is a mix of river valley and woodland, with elevations ranging roughly from 150 to 420 meters above sea level.

History: The settlement originated in the 12th century as a farming village. The construction of water mills in the 14th century spurred growth, and Mahlgrad received town rights in 1463. The 19th century brought industrialization in small-scale manufacturing and improved trade connections. After World War II the town redeveloped its economy toward services, while preserving its rural character.

Economy: Today the economy centers on agriculture (grains and hops), light manufacturing, and tourism. Local crafts and a weekly market supplement income for many residents. Transportation and infrastructure support small-scale industry and rural trade.

Governance and demographics: Mahlgrad is governed by a mayor and a 15-member town council. It is part of Nordmark Province and the Veridian regional district. The population is predominantly Veridian-speaking, with a small minority of Liabish speakers; the community is aging but relatively stable.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include the preserved Mahlgrad Mill complex and the 18th-century Mahlgrad Tower. The town hosts an annual harvest festival and a monthly farmers market, attracting visitors from surrounding municipalities.
