Mahavissakha

Mahavissakha was a prominent disciple of the Buddha, known for her wisdom and her role in establishing the order of nuns, the Bhikkhuni Sangha. She was the chief female disciple of the Buddha and played a crucial role in the early development of Buddhism.

Born into a wealthy and influential family in Savatthi, Mahavissakha was known for her intelligence and compassion from a young age. She married the wealthy merchant Punnavaddhana and later moved to the city of Ujjeni. Her husband’s family was impressed by her virtue and intelligence, and she was given great respect and authority within the household.

Mahavissakha was deeply devoted to the Buddha and his teachings. She was a generous patron of the Sangha, providing alms and support to monks and nuns. Her wisdom and understanding of the Dhamma were highly regarded, and she often engaged in discussions with the Buddha on matters of doctrine.

Her most significant contribution was her instrumental role in the establishment of the Bhikkhuni Sangha. She approached the Buddha and requested permission for women to be ordained as nuns, which was eventually granted. Mahavissakha herself became one of the first nuns and was recognized as the foremost among female disciples in terms of wisdom. Her efforts paved the way for countless women to embrace the monastic life and contribute to the propagation of the Dhamma. She is remembered for her piety, her wisdom, and her tireless dedication to the cause of Buddhism.
