Magrat, formally Magrat Garlick and commonly known simply as Magrat, is a fictional witch in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. She first appears in Wyrd Sisters (1988) as the youngest member of the Lancre witches, joining Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. Magrat is portrayed as earnest, idealistic, and more fashion-conscious than her counterparts, with a particular interest in cosmetics and romance. Her presence contrasts with Weatherwax’s pragmatism and Ogg’s warmth, highlighting different approaches to witchcraft within the coven.

Across the series, Magrat’s character arc centers on growth from a naive apprentice to a more confident, pragmatic witch. She plays a key role in Witches Abroad (1991), where her engagement and the ideal of true love propel the plot as she travels to the land of Genua with Weatherwax and Ogg to navigate a forced marriage and its consequences. In Carpe Jugulum (1998), she faces a vampire crisis that tests her abilities and courage, underscoring themes of community, resilience, and the tension between romance and practical witchcraft.

Magrat’s surname Garlick is a playful nod to garlic, a common vampire deterrent in folklore, reflecting Discworld’s habit of humorously grafting wordplay onto character names. The character’s ongoing presence in the Witch arc of the series has made her a recognizable figure among Discworld fans, often associated with themes of female friendship, personal growth, and the balance between idealism and realism within magical life.
