Magnetisaatiotyypit, or types of magnetization, refer to the different ways a material can become magnetic. These classifications help us understand how magnetic fields interact with matter and the resulting magnetic properties. The primary types are diamagnetism, paramagnetism, and ferromagnetism, with antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism being related categories.

Diamagnetism is a property exhibited by all materials, although it is often masked by stronger magnetic effects. When a material is placed in an external magnetic field, diamagnetic substances produce a weak magnetic field in opposition to the applied field. This results in a slight repulsion from the magnet.

Paramagnetism occurs in materials where individual atoms or molecules possess unpaired electrons, giving them a net magnetic moment. In the absence of an external magnetic field, these moments are randomly oriented. When an external field is applied, these moments tend to align with the field, resulting in a weak attraction. This alignment is temperature-dependent.

Ferromagnetism is the strongest form of magnetism and is characterized by the spontaneous alignment of magnetic moments of atoms in large regions called magnetic domains. Even in the absence of an external field, ferromagnetic materials can retain their magnetization, becoming permanent magnets. They are strongly attracted to magnetic fields.

Antiferromagnetism involves adjacent atomic magnetic moments aligning in opposite directions and canceling each other out, resulting in no net magnetic moment. Ferrimagnetism is similar to antiferromagnetism but with unequal opposing moments, leading to a net magnetic moment and a strong attraction to magnetic fields, similar to ferromagnetism but often with weaker overall magnetism.
