Magmakivistä

Magmakivistä, also known as igneous rocks, are one of the three main rock types, alongside sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. They are formed from the cooling and solidification of molten rock material. This molten material can originate from deep within the Earth's mantle or crust, or from volcanic eruptions.

Igneous rocks are classified based on their composition and texture. Composition refers to the types of minerals present, which are largely determined by the original chemical makeup of the magma or lava. Texture describes the size, shape, and arrangement of the mineral grains within the rock. For instance, rocks that cool slowly beneath the Earth's surface tend to have larger, visible crystals (phaneritic texture), while rocks that cool rapidly on the surface, such as from lava flows, often have very fine grains or even a glassy appearance (aphanitic or glassy texture).

Common examples of magmakivistä include granite, basalt, obsidian, and pumice. Granite, a coarse-grained rock rich in quartz and feldspar, typically forms from slow cooling magma deep underground. Basalt, a fine-grained, dark-colored rock, is common in volcanic regions and forms from rapidly cooled lava. Obsidian is volcanic glass, formed from very rapid cooling, while pumice is a frothy, lightweight volcanic rock with many trapped gas bubbles. The formation and characteristics of magmakivistä provide valuable insights into the Earth's geological history and internal processes.
