Macedoniaputs

Macedoniaputs refers to a series of political events in the Republic of Macedonia during the late 2000s and early 2010s that involved alleged attempts to undermine democratic processes and manipulate election results. These events were primarily linked to the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party and its leader, Nikola Gruevski.

The term gained prominence with the wiretapping scandal that erupted in early 2015, when the opposition Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) began releasing illegally obtained recordings of conversations. These recordings purported to reveal widespread corruption, abuse of power, and manipulation of elections by the government. The allegations included vote-buying, pressure on public officials, and interference with the judiciary and media.

The wiretapping scandal led to widespread protests and calls for the government's resignation. An interim government was formed in 2016 to oversee early elections, as part of an agreement mediated by the European Union and the United States to address the political crisis. Nikola Gruevski eventually resigned as Prime Minister in January 2016.
