Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, commonly known as Gloria Macapagal Arroyo or GMA, is a Filipino politician who served as the 14th President of the Philippines from 2001 to 2010. Born Gloria Macapagal on April 5, 1947, in Manila, she is the daughter of former President Diosdado Macapagal and former First Lady Eva Macapagal. She is also the sister of former Senator and presidential candidate Manuel Macapagal Jr.

Arroyo began her political career in the 1980s, serving as a member of the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1992. She later became the Secretary of Social Welfare and Development under President Fidel V. Ramos from 1992 to 1995. In 1998, she was elected as the Vice President of the Philippines, serving under President Joseph Estrada until Estrada's impeachment and subsequent resignation in 2001.

Following Estrada's ouster, Arroyo assumed the presidency as acting president and later won the 2004 presidential election, becoming the first woman to be directly elected as president in the Philippines. Her presidency was marked by economic growth, infrastructure development, and efforts to combat corruption. However, it was also plagued by controversies, including allegations of electoral fraud in the 2004 election, which led to widespread protests known as the EDSA III Revolution.

During her term, Arroyo implemented various social programs, such as the 4Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program), aimed at reducing poverty. She also focused on improving education and healthcare services. Internationally, Arroyo played a significant role in regional diplomacy, particularly in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations.

After leaving office in 2010, Arroyo remained active in politics, running for the Senate in 2010 and 2013 but losing both times. She has continued to be a prominent figure in Philippine politics, often voicing her opinions on various national issues. Arroyo is known for her strong leadership style and her advocacy for women's rights and education.
