Maanmittaus

Maanmittaus, or land surveying, refers to the measurement and mapping of land, including determining property boundaries, measuring parcels, and producing maps and geospatial data. The field combines geodesy, geomatics, and cartography and underpins property rights, planning, and infrastructure development. Core activities include cadastral surveying, which defines and registers real estate boundaries; topographic surveying, which records natural and built features; and geodetic surveying, which establishes stable reference frames for coordinates and maps. Modern maanmittaus also involves remote sensing, photogrammetry, GNSS, total stations, and laser scanning to create accurate digital models and maps.

In Finland, maanmittaus is closely associated with the Maanmittauslaitos, the Finnish National Land Survey. This government agency is responsible for administering the cadastral system, producing official maps, maintaining topographic data, and providing geographic information services to public authorities, businesses, and citizens. The data produced, including cadastral boundaries, property ownership information, orthophotos, and digital elevation models, support land use planning, real estate transactions, taxation, infrastructure, and environmental management.

The practice is governed by national legislation on property rights and land registration, and professionals in the field work with municipalities, courts, and other public bodies as well as private landowners.
