Programs typically select breeds with strong drive and trainability, notably German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois. Training includes scent work, obedience, bite work, and scenario-based exercises. MWD teams operate in a variety of environments and may work alongside handlers in combat zones, border security, airports, and facilities. They are valued for mobility, speed, and sensitive detection capabilities, though welfare and retirement considerations are addressed through ongoing care and handler support.
