MOSOP

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, commonly known as MOSOP, is a non-governmental organization that advocates for the rights and interests of the Ogoni people, an ethnic minority group in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Founded in 1990 by Ken Saro-Wiwa, MOSOP emerged in response to the environmental degradation and social injustices faced by the Ogoni people due to oil exploration by multinational corporations, particularly Shell.

MOSOP's primary objectives include seeking environmental remediation for the polluted lands and waters of Ogoniland, demanding greater political autonomy for the Ogoni people, and advocating for fair revenue sharing from oil production. The movement gained international attention through its non-violent campaigns, which included protests, boycotts, and diplomatic efforts. However, their activism also led to severe repression by the Nigerian government, culminating in the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other MOSOP leaders in 1995.

Despite facing significant challenges, MOSOP continues its advocacy, working towards sustainable development, environmental justice, and the protection of the rights of the Ogoni people. Its legacy is intertwined with the broader struggle for environmental activism and minority rights in Nigeria and globally.
