The primary function of a MOSFET output stage is to provide current gain and voltage gain to the input signal. MOSFETs are chosen for these applications due to their high input impedance, fast switching speeds, and relatively low on-resistance when fully turned on. This on-resistance is a key parameter as it directly impacts the efficiency and power dissipation of the stage.

Common configurations for MOSFET output stages include class A, class AB, and class D. Class A amplifiers provide continuous amplification of the entire input waveform, offering high fidelity but lower efficiency. Class AB amplifiers offer a compromise between fidelity and efficiency, biasing the transistors to conduct for more than 180 degrees of the input cycle. Class D amplifiers, which are very efficient, operate by switching the MOSFETs on and off rapidly, effectively modulating the power delivered to the load.

The design of a MOSFET output stage involves careful consideration of parameters such as voltage and current ratings of the MOSFETs, heat dissipation, power supply requirements, and distortion characteristics.
