MIMEsähköpostissa

MIMEsähköpostissa refers to the use of MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) standards within email. MIME is a set of specifications that extends the original Internet electronic mail format, allowing for the transmission of various types of data beyond simple text. This includes binary files such as images, audio, video, and application-specific data, as well as different character sets.

Before MIME, email was largely limited to ASCII text. When sending non-textual data, users often resorted to encoding methods like Base64 or UUencode, which made the data readable as text but increased its size and required manual decoding. MIME standardized this process, providing a way to identify the content type of the message body.

Key components of MIME in email include the Content-Type header, which specifies the type of data being sent (e.g., text/plain, image/jpeg, application/pdf), and the Content-Transfer-Encoding header, which indicates how the data has been encoded for transmission (e.g., base64, quoted-printable). These headers allow email clients to correctly interpret and display or process the attached or embedded content.

MIME also enables the creation of multipart messages, where an email can contain multiple parts, each with its own content type. This is commonly seen when an email has both plain text and an HTML version, or when attachments are included. The widespread adoption of MIME has been crucial for the rich and diverse functionality of modern email communication, allowing for the exchange of a vast array of information beyond simple messages.
