MHEVs

MHEV stands for Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle. It represents a type of hybrid vehicle that uses an electric motor to assist the internal combustion engine, but it cannot solely power the vehicle on electricity. The electric motor in an MHEV typically serves to provide a torque boost during acceleration, allow for a wider range of regenerative braking, and enable smoother engine start-stop functionality.

Unlike full hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, MHEVs have a smaller battery pack and a less powerful electric motor. This means they cannot achieve electric-only driving for any significant distance or at higher speeds. The primary benefit of the electric assistance is improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to a conventional gasoline or diesel car. The electric motor is powered by the braking system through regenerative braking, capturing energy that would otherwise be lost as heat.

MHEVs are often seen as an entry-level form of electrification. They offer some of the advantages of hybrid technology without the complexity or cost associated with larger battery systems and electric drivetrains. The integration of the electric motor is typically straightforward, often replacing the traditional alternator and starter motor with a combined unit. This allows for features like gliding or coasting with the engine off at certain speeds, further enhancing fuel economy.
