MEWPs

MEWPs is an acronym for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms. These are mechanical devices used to temporarily move people and equipment to accessible heights. They are commonly known by various trade names such as aerial work platforms, cherry pickers, scissor lifts, and boom lifts. MEWPs consist of a platform or bucket attached to a lifting mechanism, which is mounted on a base or chassis, often mobile.

The primary function of a MEWP is to provide a safe and stable working surface for individuals performing tasks at elevated positions. This can range from construction and maintenance work to tree trimming and event setup. MEWPs offer a safer alternative to traditional scaffolding or ladders, reducing the risk of falls and improving work efficiency.

There are several types of MEWPs, each designed for different applications. Scissor lifts use a series of linked, folding supports in a criss-cross "X" pattern, moving the platform straight up. Boom lifts, including articulating and telescopic booms, use hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders to extend a mechanical arm, providing greater horizontal and vertical reach. Towable boom lifts and vertical mast lifts are also common variations.
