METBs

METBs stands for Mobile Electric Trolleybuses. These are a type of electric bus that operates on electricity supplied through overhead wires, similar to traditional trolleybuses, but with the added capability of detaching from the overhead lines for short distances. This allows them to travel off-route or bypass temporary obstructions without disrupting service.

The technology behind METBs involves a combination of battery storage and the connection to the electrical grid via retractable poles. When connected to the overhead wires, the bus draws power to propel itself and simultaneously recharge its onboard batteries. When it needs to deviate from the wire, the poles are retracted, and the bus operates solely on battery power for a predetermined range. This hybrid approach offers greater flexibility than conventional trolleybuses, enabling them to serve areas not directly covered by the trolleybus network or to navigate around roadworks or traffic incidents more efficiently.

METBs are considered an environmentally friendly mode of transport, as they produce zero tailpipe emissions during operation. The electricity used to power them can be sourced from renewable energy, further reducing their carbon footprint.
