MCV4

MCV4 stands for meningococcal conjugate vaccine, quadrivalent. It is designed to protect against disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W, and Y, which can lead to meningitis and bloodstream infections. The vaccine helps reduce the risk of invasive meningococcal disease caused by these four serogroups.

MCV4 is not active against serogroup B. Separate vaccines exist to protect against serogroup B disease, and they may be recommended in certain situations or populations. Several formulations of MCV4 are licensed, including Menactra (MCV4-D) and Menveo (MCV4-CRM), with additional quadrivalent products such as MenQuadfi (MCV4-TT) introduced in various regions. Age indications vary by product, and the vaccine is delivered by intramuscular injection.

In many countries, MCV4 is part of routine vaccination programs for adolescents, typically given as a dose around 11–12 years of age with a booster during the teenage years. It is also recommended for people at increased risk of meningococcal disease, such as individuals with certain immune or anatomical conditions (for example, functional asplenia or complement deficiencies), laboratory workers handling meningococci, and travelers to regions with ongoing meningococcal transmission or outbreaks. Vaccination schedules may differ by product and by country, and healthcare providers determine the appropriate regimen based on age and risk factors.

Common side effects are usually mild and include pain at the injection site, redness, swelling, fever, and fatigue. Serious adverse events are rare. Contraindications include a history of severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or to a vaccine component.
