Menactra

Menactra is a meningococcal vaccine of the quadrivalent type (MenACWY) that protects against Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W, and Y. It is produced by Sanofi Pasteur and has been used in routine immunization programs and in catch-up vaccination efforts to prevent invasive meningococcal disease.

The vaccine works as a conjugate vaccine, in which polysaccharide capsules from the four meningococcal serogroups are chemically linked to a protein carrier, typically a variant of diphtheria toxoid. This conjugation helps trigger a stronger, longer-lasting immune response and can enhance immune memory, including in young children.

Indications and administration: Menactra is given by intramuscular injection, usually into the upper arm. Dosing schedules vary by age, health status, and local guidelines; healthcare providers will determine the appropriate number of doses and timing. In many settings, adolescents receive a dose with a booster at a later age to maintain protection, and individuals at higher risk or traveling to affected areas may follow a catch-up or special vaccination schedule.

Safety and precautions: Common side effects include soreness at the injection site, fever, irritability, or fatigue. Serious adverse events are rare. Contraindications include a history of severe allergic reaction to Menactra or any of its components, and to a previous dose, as well as certain acute illnesses at the time of vaccination. As with all vaccines, vaccination decisions during pregnancy or in special clinical circumstances should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
