MARPOLmääräyss
MARPOLmääräyss refers to regulations established under MARPOL, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. MARPOL is the primary international convention covering the prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships, whether arising from operational or accidental causes. It is a combination of two treaties adopted in 1973 and its Protocol of 1978. MARPOLmääräyss are specific annexes within this convention that address different types of pollution. These annexes cover oil, noxious liquid substances in bulk, harmful substances in packaged form, sewage, garbage, and air pollution from ships. Each annex sets out specific requirements and standards for ship design, equipment, operation, and management to minimize pollution. Compliance with MARPOLmääräyss is mandatory for ships engaged in international voyages and is enforced by flag states and port states. Failure to comply can result in penalties, including fines and detention of vessels. The convention is regularly updated to address emerging environmental concerns and technological advancements in maritime pollution prevention.
