If a collision occurs, meaning two or more devices transmit at the same time, they detect it, stop transmitting, and wait a random amount of time before trying again. In contrast, CSMA/CA, used in wireless networks where detecting collisions is more difficult, involves devices listening and then sending a request to send (RTS) before transmitting actual data. The receiving device acknowledges the RTS, and only then is the data sent. This helps to avoid collisions by reserving the medium.

The MAC address, a unique hardware identifier assigned to network interfaces, is also a fundamental component managed by the MAC layer. This address is used for local network communication, ensuring data packets are delivered to the correct device on a local segment.
